Greek mythology proffered that Sirens were exquisitely gorgeous creatures who lived on an island surrounded by dangerous reefs. The Sirens’ beauty was equaled by their singing voice and the combination of the two proved irresistible to passing sailors. But while heading to the island hoping for romance, the sailors’ hopes and ships were destroyed by the island’s waves and smashed by reefs, rocks and cliffs. Having floated around the epicenter of professional surfing for nearly 40 years, Aussie Al Hunt has probably heard the call of the surf siren at pro-contests around the globe more than anyone else alive. And it is perhaps that siren that can shoulder some of the blame for luring the 59-year-old into a collection of surf memorabilia that has become an all-consuming passion.
