- Description
- Given the extent of physical and social morbidity associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and given the increase in its incidence and increases in life expectancy, it is important that health care providers are aware of the extent and nature of needs experienced by the individual. Unlike quality of life (QOL) instruments which assess the persons' perception of their current experience, needs assessment measures the perception of issues with which the person requires help, identifying the gap between expectation and actual experience. A self-administered SLE needs questionnaire (SLENQ) has been developed providing a reliable and valid index of the needs of people with SLE. Its seven dimensions of need provide breadth as well as the ability to define specific needs independently Initial and regular use of the questionnaire will help care providers identify if current provision of care is achieving its objective, and may also alert clinicians to the onset of a SLE flare as well as helping subsequent direct management strategies.
