- Description
- This scoping paper examines the complex issue of assessing and understanding community views about the restructuring of rural industry that are based on natural resources. It explores local community stakeholders and visitors perceptions of coal seam gas (CSG) using repertory grid as an alternative methodology designed to capture subjectivities around the quality of nature in a regional rural area. It considers how these subjectivities associated with traditional agriculture, forestry, mining and tourism activities are construed as stable contributors not only to rural economies but also to the development of local economies. This paper also demonstrates how this type of analysis can be used to understand individual residents’ and visitors decisions to support or reject CSG proposals. It concludes by considering how this assessment system might aid in exploring the impact these types of activities have on destination image assessment and in reconciling stakeholder conflict over the usage of natural resource by industry in regional rural areas by offering a structured means of giving heterogeneous rural communities and visitors a formal voice in tourism-planning processes.
