- Description
- Newcastle, Australia was established as an industrial settlement using convict labour in 1804. It remains an industrial city and is the largest coal export port in the world. Although it was originally established as a penal centre for ‘incorrigible convicts’, by the 1880s Newcastle had developed and became a modern High Victorian city. With the railroad connection to Sydney it had become not only a place of investment but also a place of tourism; hotels began to cater for industrial entrepreneurs and tourists. Some of the finest architecture in New-castle is hotels, which are now in various states of preservation. Newcastle was also a strongly unionised city, with hotels facilitating political meetings. Many of the hotels of Newcastle are iconic in their architecture and they have also been luxurious, political and even notorious. However, their cultural history is a significant part of Newcastle’s history. There is an argument to be made about the importance of not only the preservation of the buildings but also the collective cultural and social histories. This paper will consider the collective and individual culture of the Newcastle hotels and their importance to the city, leading to the important question of how is the collective and more intangible culture heritage preserved, not just the individual buildings?
