- Description
- The morphological status (i.e. status as word or affix) of Için 'for' and its cognates seems to differ among Turkic languages, and in some languages and dialects this status is not clear, that is, accounts seem to differ or be ambiguous, or the cognate can be either an affix or a separate word. In this paper I shall survey what some works on Turkic languages and dialects say about this matter and discuss various ways of determining its status. In some languages, e.g. Bashkir, the cognate of Için is always a separate word, i.e. a postposition, and in at least one language, Chuvash, it apparently is always an affix, although views differ on whether it is a case affix or some other type of affix. In several other languages, including Turkish, the facts are not clear: either sources differ on whether Için can be attached to the preceding word, or if it is attached, it does not have all of the properties one might expect of case suffixes in Turkic languages, for example it does not follow vowel harmony. The cause of this difficulty in classification is presumably that some cognates of Için are becoming or have become (depending on the language) suffixes, sharing the fate of some postpositions in many other languages of the world, but this process takes place over a period of time and when an item is in the intermediate stages, it has some properties of postpositions and some properties of suffixes. Having looked at such differences among Turkic languages, I shall then discuss possible reasons for them. That is, I shall look at factors making it more or less likely for a cognate of Için to become a case suffix.
