- The image of the kindly, maternal mistress has dominated Australian cultural representations of white women in their relationships with Aboriginal women, until the 1970s when it began to be seriously challenged by Aboriginal women's representations of their experiences. Indeed the historical record indicates that the image bore little connection with reality, particularly in terms of white women's capacity to protect Aboriginal domestic workers from abuse and exploitation, and that in certain critical ways it actually facilitated and masked their own exploitation of Aboriginal women. Perhaps the most powerful impact of this representation of white women's relationships with Aboriginal women, however, was the way in which it functioned to legitimize and encourage white women to participate in the modem twentieth-century state's colonizing project of removing Aboriginal girls for domestic service.
