- This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the influence of both soil moisture and compaction on the corrosion of mild steel buried in clay soils. Mild steel samples were buried in soils prepared at different moisture contents and compacted to different levels, and were left to corrode for 3 months. Mass loss due to corrosion in the soils was measured after 3 months exposure and plotted against both moisture content and degree of saturation. The results were compared to results from similar tests on sand and loam soils.
