- Description
- A large body of scientific literature links the positive psychology constructs of hope and mindfulness to better mental health outcomes and reduced levels of psychological distress. Comparably fewer published works explore the relationship between hope and mindfulness as they interact with one another to impact on psychological outcomes. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between dispositional hope, the five facets of dispositional mindfulness and psychological distress. A non-clinical sample of 649 (510 females) adults completed an online survey. Results revealed that dispositional hope and dispositional mindfulness were negatively correlated with psychological distress, and that dispositional hope was positively correlated with all five facets of dispositional mindfulness. Structural equation modelling revealed that the five facets of dispositional mindfulness contributed to the partial mediation in different ways. The Observing facet only contributed a direct pathway to psychological distress and the Non-reactivity to Inner Experiences facet only contributed an indirect pathway through hope, to psychological distress. The Describing, Acting with Awareness and Non-judgment of Inner Experiences facets contributed both directly and indirectly through hope, to psychological distress. Results suggest that hope partially mediates the relationship between some facets of dispositional mindfulness and psychological distress. Limitations of the study and implications for clinical intervention and research are discussed.
