- Description
- The term 'spine' has no formal status in anatomic nomenclature. However, in colloquial usage it refers to that part of the body that surrounds the vertebral column. Accordingly, the spine can be defined as the vertebral column, its contents and immediate adnexae, the latter being the muscles, nerves and blood vessels of the vertebral column. Anatomy: the design of vertebrae and their joints ; muscles of the vertebral column ; spinal nerves, dermatomes, myotomes. Biomechanics: movements of the cervical and lumbar spine ; lifting, fatigue failure ; instability.
