- Description
- This paper discusses several art-based encryption strategies used by artists to convert raw material into biologically compatible and comprehensible information as coded DNA. This is for the purpose of applying such material into living organisms as part of a new form of 'Genetic Art'. 'Genetic Art' is a term first coined by the internationally renowned 'Genetic Artist' George Gessert. 'Genetic Art' here can be broadly understood to include any art based use of genetics principles and/or genetic engineering technologies as a point of creative departure. 'Genetic Art' is art based on interpretations of genetics and/or genetic engineering and is a broad descriptor for a wide range of traditional and contemporary media interpretations using, for example, sculpture, painting, photography and electronic media. In response to what is arguably the most far reaching new technology development of contemporary society, genetic engineering, the number of exponents of 'Genetic Art' world wide dealing with critical issues surrounding these genetics technologies is rapidly increasing. For the most part however these 'Genetic Artists' are creating fictional equivalents, representations and simulations including the use of electronic technology and scientific bio-informational systems. this paper postulates 'non ©ode code' as the underlying unifying aesthetic principle behind distinctive and more radicalized interpretations of 'Genetic Art' encompassing new media/new technology processes in living art based on genetic engineering.
