Using a stop-signal paradigm with a number parity go task, we implemented a novel hierarchical Bayesian model of response inhibition that estimates stop-signal reaction time (SSRT) as a distribution and also accounts for failures to react to the stop-signal (i.e., “trigger failure”), and failure to react to the choice stimulus (i.e., “go failure” or omission errors). In line with previous studies, the model reduced estimates of SSRT by approximately 100 ms compared with traditional non-parametric SSRT estimation techniques. We found significant relationships between behavioural and self-report measures of impulsivity and traditionally estimated SSRT, that did not hold for the model-based SSRT estimates. Instead, behavioural impulsivity measures were correlated with rate of trigger failure. The relationship between trigger failure and impulsivity suggests that the former may index a higher order inhibition process, whereas SSRT may index a more automatic inhibition process. We suggest that the existence of distinct response inhibition processes that may be associated with different levels of cognitive control.]]> Wed 25 Jan 2023 11:37:35 AEDT ]]> Modeling the dynamics of recognition memory testing with an integrated model of retrieval and decision making https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:43286 Wed 24 May 2023 10:25:16 AEST ]]> Understanding the causes of adapting, and failing to adapt, to time pressure in a complex multistimulus environment https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:42040 Wed 17 Aug 2022 12:20:19 AEST ]]> Accumulating advantages: a new conceptualization of rapid multiple choice https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:43187 Wed 14 Sep 2022 08:51:30 AEST ]]> Proactive cues facilitate faster action reprogramming, but not stopping, in a response-selective stop signal task https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:54799 Wed 13 Mar 2024 11:28:23 AEDT ]]> Evidence accumulation modelling in the wild: understanding safety-critical decisions https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:50257 Wed 12 Jul 2023 10:27:00 AEST ]]> A dissociation between similarity effects in episodic face recognition https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:8161 Wed 11 Apr 2018 17:22:34 AEST ]]> When the brain takes a break: a model-based analysis of mind wandering https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:18253 Wed 11 Apr 2018 17:22:11 AEST ]]> Drawing conclusions from choice response time models: a tutorial using the linear ballistic accumulator https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:11028 Wed 11 Apr 2018 17:07:02 AEST ]]> Advance preparation in task-switching: converging evidence from behavioral, brain activation, and model-based approaches https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:9435 Wed 11 Apr 2018 16:57:56 AEST ]]> The best of times and the worst of times are interchangeable. https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:19437 Wed 11 Apr 2018 16:27:02 AEST ]]> Stimulus-specific learning: disrupting the bow effect in absolute identification https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:11027 Wed 11 Apr 2018 16:24:26 AEST ]]> Mismatch negativity (MMN) to pitch change is susceptible to order-dependent bias https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:16005 Wed 11 Apr 2018 16:10:31 AEST ]]> Integrating cognitive process and descriptive models of attitudes and preferences https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:15562 Wed 11 Apr 2018 16:08:29 AEST ]]> Linear deterministic accumulator models of simple choice https://novaprd-lb.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:21581 between-choice noise) dominate the effects of fluctuations occurring while making a choice (within-choice noise) in behavioral data (i.e., response times and choices). The latter deterministic approximation, when combined with the assumption that accumulation is linear, leads to a class of models that can be readily applied to simple-choice behavior because they are computationally tractable. We develop a new and mathematically simple exemplar within the class of linear deterministic models, the Lognormal race (LNR). Using MEG decoding, we tested if the same relationship holds when a stimulus manipulation (degradation) increases task difficulty, which we predicted would systematically decrease the distance of activation patterns from the decision boundary and increase RTs. In addition, we tested whether distance to the classifier boundary correlates with drift rates in the linear ballistic accumulator [Brown, S. D., & Heathcote, A. We found that distance to the classifier boundary correlated with RT, accuracy, and drift rates in an animacy categorization task. Split by animacy, the correlations between brain and behavior were sustained longer over the time course for animate than for inanimate stimuli. Interestingly, when examining the distance to the classifier boundary during the peak correlation between brain and behavior, we found that only degraded versions of animate, but not inanimate, objects had systematically shifted toward the classifier decision boundary as predicted.
